82-Year-Old Acquitted in Online Fraud Case Due to Identity Theft

Unaware of everything, he ended up on trial for an online fraud committed in his name, using the document that had been stolen from him: an 82-year-old was acquitted. Yesterday, the court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere fully acquitted an 82-year-old man from Torre del Greco, a retired health service official suffering from senile dementia, as he had not committed the deed. The elderly man had been brought to trial for aggravated fraud. Assisted by lawyer Pasquale Scognamiglio, the 82-year-old was able to explain to the judges that he had been the victim of identity theft. In practice, his identity document had been stolen, which was then used to register a prepaid card, linked to a phone number registered to a foreigner, and then used to commit a series of online frauds. The 82-year-old found himself on trial without knowing anything about what had happened, but he was able to prove his total estrangement from the facts.
