A Call to Action for the Land of Fires

The ruling of the European Court of Human Rights on the Land of Fires is a further reminder of the need for decisive and immediate action to address an emergency that the citizens of Campania have been experiencing firsthand for decades. It is unacceptable that the citizens of Campania have been left alone for years to face a situation born of organized crime and the inertia of those who should have intervened earlier," said FdI parliamentarian Gerolamo Cangiano, vice president of the Ecomafie Commission, in relation to the ECHR ruling on the Land of Fires case concerning the provinces of Naples and Caserta. According to Cangiano, moreover, "today, under the Meloni Government, the fight against environmental crimes and the protection of public health is an absolute priority. As vice president of the Ecomafie Commission, I can assure you that we are working on a specific inquiry dedicated to the Land of Fires, with a particular focus on the serious problem of groundwater pollution. This is the heart of the problem: for too long, toxic waste has been dumped without any control, and today we are paying the consequences in terms of health and safety. We must work together to find measures for environmental remediation, a crackdown on illegal waste-related activities, and concrete action to ensure clean water and air for future generations," he concludes. Cangiano also emphasized the commitment in the Ecomafie Commission (last Wednesday the annual report of the bicameral parliamentary body was presented) in relation to waste trafficking, environmental crimes, and damage to agriculture. On these specific aspects, the same commission has shed light on the Land of Fires case.
