A Musical Tribute to Giovanbattista Cutolo: Honoring a Young Musician's Legacy

Nearly a hundred musicians will pay tribute to the memory of the young Giovanbattista Cutolo, the horn player taken from the beauty of music and life on August 31 last year. The event on March 25 (6:45 PM) at the Basilica of S. Giacomo degli Spagnoli in Piazza Municipio, a short distance from where Giogiò was killed. The protagonists of the event are the Symphony Orchestra of the Spanish Quarters conducted by Giuseppe Mallozzi and the Coro della Pietrasanta led by master Rosario Peluso. The guest of honor is the flautist Tommaso Rossi, artistic director of the Alessandro Scarlatti Association, who will participate as a partner of the event together with two Neapolitan schools, the Liceo Musicale Palizzi and the I.C D’Aosta – Scura di Napoli, joined for the occasion by the Liceo Musicale Cirillo of Aversa. The event was made possible thanks to the availability of the Archconfraternity and Monte del SS. Sacramento dei Nobili Spagnoli and the Comitato Partidarios De Santiago, entities responsible for the monumental basilica, recognized as the National Church of Spain. The program is divided into two sections, the first dedicated to Italy, the second to Spain. In the first part, Tommaso Rossi will be the soloist of the Concerto for recorder, strings, and continuo by Giuseppe Sammartini. Choir and Orchestra will then perform for the first time "In Memoriam Ioannis Baptistae, pro Pulchritudine contra Violentiam", composed by master Dario Ascoli in the hours immediately following the young musician's murder. The piece will be preceded by the Ouverture from "L'Infedeltà Fedele" by Cimarosa, written by the author in 1779 to inaugurate the current Teatro Mercadante and revised by Ascoli in the days preceding the murder. In the second part of the evening, the Four original versions of the "Ritirata Notturna di Madrid" by Luciano Berio, and the "Danzón No. 2" by Jesús Arturo Márquez Navarro will be performed.
