The mayor of Benevento, Clemente Mastella, has asked the president of the Municipal Council, Renato Parente, to convene a special session of the Municipal Council «to commemorate the figure of Alexey Navalny, a politician and activist who died in a Russian Arctic prison, at the end of a very harsh and unfair detention». The Council will take place on Wednesday, February 21, from 9.30 am.
«Navalny - declares Mastella - is a martyr of freedom, a symbol of the inhuman brutality of autocracy: it chills anyone who is engaged in politics or in civil society, to think about the price this man was forced to pay to defend his own ideas and the right to express them. His civil martyrdom, the heroic courage he has shown must not leave us indifferent: the Municipal Council of Benevento, a city of culture and freedom, will pay a fitting tribute to Navalny and to all those who have fought for freedom at the cost of their lives. I am sure that the Assembly of Benevento will send a clear message against the virus of political violence and in favor of democracy and its values», concludes the mayor of Benevento.
