The Carabinieri of the Benevento company are taking action against scams in general, and particularly those targeting the elderly. In recent hours, an awareness initiative was carried out on the subject, promoted by the company commander, Captain Emanuele Grio, assisted by the commander of the Pietrelcina station, Lieutenant Enrico Vernillo. The initiative sparked the interest and participation of many citizens who gathered in the church of San Donato in Pago Veiano, in the presence of the parish priest don Gaetano Collarile. They listened to the advice given by the military to protect themselves from scams and deceptions that, in most cases, target the elderly. Often, the elderly are alone at home and scammers prey on their deepest feelings such as a mother or father's love for their children or the physical frailty of the elderly. The officer of the Arma spoke on these issues and on some simple rules to put into practice, bringing many examples, and advising caution when strangers contact by phone claiming a relative has been involved in an accident, hinting at problems with insurance or justice, and then asking for money. He also urged caution when ill-intentioned people pose as couriers, forcing the unfortunate to pay for the collection of a package, making them believe it was ordered by a relative. He also discussed so-called cyber scams (made through the sending of fake emails or text messages from credit institutions) and so-called 'romantic' scams.
The meeting was just the first of many moments of dialogue planned by the provincial command of the Carabinieri in Benevento, which will take place throughout the jurisdiction. The final advice for all citizens, in case of a request for help, need or even just for information, is to turn to the emergency number 112 of the Carabinieri.
