Carabinieri in action to teach the elderly how to thwart scams. Yesterday at the Parish of Sant’Antonio and San Vincenzo Diacono in Torrecuso, a meeting was held to prevent the phenomenon thanks to Auser «Alfredo Pontorieri», with the commander of the Carabinieri Company of Benevento Emanuele Grio and the commander of the Paupisi Station Ignazio Abate present.
During the evening, simple yet useful and effective advice was given to those present on how to defend themselves from the dangers posed by true crime professionals, such as being wary of people who, dressing in authority, such as lawyers, members of the law enforcement or bank employees, use the telephone to communicate possible misfortunes or unpleasant events concerning family members.
The population showed a lot of interest and asked the military questions about «cyber scams» (phishing, smishing, and vishing) carried out through the sending of emails, SMS, phone calls, and about «romantic» scams (catfishing). Therefore, indications were given on how to defend oneself and what to do immediately, by calling 112 to report attempts at scams or simply to ask for information.
And speaking of scams, the carabinieri have identified and reported an individual who received a transfer into an account in his name for a value of almost 10,000 euros. The victim of the scam had been convinced by a man who had posed as an employee of a credit institution who had contacted her several times, reporting that he had detected unusual operations on her current account (suspicious credits) and inviting her, to solve the problem, to make a transfer.
