He falsified the waiting lists at the hospital, convicted for ideological forgery, Carlo Iannace the well-known Irpino-Sannita doctor. He now risks being struck off the register. As an additional penalty, the court has suspended him from public office for three years. This means that he could no longer operate in public hospitals. Or he could see his employment relationship transformed - this is the path his lawyers intend to pursue - into a private contract in order to remain in the hospital company.
And now solidarity is triggered: a petition has started and spontaneous initiatives in support of the doctor committed to solidarity and associationism, Iannace is the promoter of Amos, the association for the prevention of cancer.
Carlo Iannace, the senologist from San Giorgio del Sannio, could now be suspended or struck off the medical order, or in any case relieved of the hospital position as he is suspended from public office. Together with the then head of the surgery department, he would have managed the operating unit of the Moscati hospital in Avellino as a private clinic. The investigation by the Avellino Finance Police was launched in 2006 following the report of a Moscati hospital aide who had reported alleged irregularities within the department where cosmetic surgeries were carried out and passed off as interventions on cancerous pathologies and therefore urgent in order to climb the long waiting lists. Excluding embezzlement, the charge of falsification in a public act remained, hence the ban from public offices which could be five years.
"My client - says lawyer Quirino Iorio - was convicted exclusively for having indicated elements of the medical records that concerned services totally at the expense of the patients. Then we will see the impact of this conviction on the work and personal profile of my client, when we read the reasons". The reasons for the sentence will be published in about 45 days.
