A dramatic dawn at the Avellino Ovest tollbooth of the A16. A 55-year-old man from Mercogliano, already known to the police, attempted to drive the wrong way on the highway. A patrol from the Carabinieri's Radiomobile Section stopped him just in time. When the 55-year-old got out of the car for the check, he tried to get rid of a gun by throwing it away. The patrol of the Radiomobile Section, engaged in a territorial patrol service, noticed the abnormal and dangerous driving of the car that tried to enter the highway in the wrong direction. Promptly blocked, the motorist (in an obvious state of psychophysical alteration), got out of the vehicle, in the clumsy attempt to get rid of it and test negative to any check, throws in the grass adjacent to the road a 7.65 caliber pistol with abraded serial number that turned out to be loaded and ready for use.
The man, who refused to undergo the alcohol test, was found without a driving license because it was revoked and the vehicle was not covered by compulsory insurance. The 55-year-old was taken to the barracks and arrested and, in agreement with the Public Prosecutor's Office of Avellino, associated with the Bellizzi Irpino Prison. Both the gun and the car were seized. The Carabinieri are carrying out investigations to establish the origin of that illegal weapon and the possible use of the weapon in criminal actions.
