Elderly Woman Tricked by Fake Grandson Scam in Fontegreca

The usual phone call from a fake grandson to the grandmother asking her to collect, on his behalf and against the payment of a sum of money, a package delivered by the courier. It happened on March 5 in Fontegreca, a small town in the province of Caserta. The victim, a 99-year-old woman, who, after handing over 1,900 euros in cash to the fake courier, realized she had been scammed. When she realized she had been duped, she requested the intervention of the carabinieri of the Capriati al Volturno Station. The military immediately started investigations and, through the viewing of the footage from the surveillance cameras of the Municipality of Fontegreca, installed along the main street, they were able to trace the make, model, color, and license plate of the car used by the scammer. It was not easy to identify the 21-year-old scammer because the vehicle was registered to a rental company with an operational headquarters in Naples, which in turn had leased it from another company based in Hungary. It was then the cross-checks between the controls returned from queries to the databases used by the police forces with those resulting from the investigations at the registry offices and with mobile phone operators that allowed the military of the Arma to identify the perpetrator as a 21-year-old from San Giorgio a Cremano, later recognized by a relative of the victim present in the house on the day of the scam.
