Gladiatorial and Military Reenactments at the Pompeii Archaeological Park

On Sunday, April 7, then on May 19, and September 8 at the Amphitheater of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, it will be possible to attend a special event: gladiators in historically accurate reconstructed attire will perform, simulating the original fights and techniques of the era. Groups of legionaries, infantry of the basic military unit of the Roman army, legions, will parade in their reconstructed armaments. A way for adults and children to participate in a demonstration of military life before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD at the Amphitheater, venue for games and exercises. It will be possible to meet the Centurion in the act of coordinating the legionaries in formation and training with the gladius, the typical weapon of the Roman military; turtle formation movements will characterize the legionary exercises; while the gladiators will train for the great ceremonies and celebrations in the presence of Roman Officers and the Prefect of Misenum, Pliny the Elder. The performances, dedicated to the historical reconstruction of civil and military life of the 1st century AD, will take place at the Pompeii Amphitheater on the following dates: April 7, May 19, September 8, and in 4 time slots (10 and 12, and 15 and 17). Participation in the event costs 5 euros, in addition to the entrance ticket to the site, while it is free for children under 6 years. The duration of the show is one hour. Following the initiative of the Sundays, on September 28 and 29, there will be a large gathering of 1st century AD Historical Groups composed of over 100 reenactors with a related military camp near the amphitheater. The Amphitheater will once again be the venue for demonstrations of Legionaries in formation and gladiator fights with a tournament dedicated to Emperor Titus, also impersonated and reenacted on the occasion. The imperial court entourage composed of Praetorians and all the other Officers of the Legions present will be highlighted. Moreover, at the Forum, a religious ceremony will be reenacted, followed by a historical procession that will move towards the Amphitheater through Via dell'Abbondanza. The initiative is curated by the Pompeii Archaeological Park in collaboration with Dyron Consulting - Reenactment and public history, with the Classis Misenensis section (Naval Fleet of Misenum), operating since 2008 in historical reconstruction activities nationally and internationally, and particularly for the major event in September, about 5/6 Legionary Companies will participate.
