The North Naples court has sentenced 36-year-old Carmine Cascio to eleven years in prison for fraud and aggravated extortion. He is accused of pretending to be a non-commissioned officer of the law enforcement, a parliamentary official, and a member of the secret services, thereby extorting money and valuables from a 51-year-old woman from Frignano, in the Caserta area, promising her a job for her son at the Papal State.
The prosecution had asked for seven years in prison. Cascio, a resident of Ciampino, was arrested in April 2022 by the Carabinieri in Aversa while receiving from the victim, as an additional extortion installment, the sum of 300 euros. Over two years, it emerged, he managed to get almost 20,000 euros from the 51-year-old in various installments, between money and other valuable items; Cascio asked the woman for continuous payments to "oil the machine" and to finalize the hiring, but when the 51-year-old decided not to pay anymore because she realized that the promises were false, the man threatened to kill her and her son.
It was the victim who then reported him and initiated the investigations that led to Cascio's arrest and conviction.
