This morning, in the presence of the Prefect of Naples, Michele Di Bari, the Chief of Police of Naples, Maurizio Agricola and the Mayor of the Municipality of Bacoli, Josi Gerardo Della Ragione, a ceremony was held in memory of Giovanni Palatucci.
Acting Police Commissioner of Fiume, at the Vanvitelliano Park of Fusaro in Bacoli where two years ago an olive tree was planted and a plaque was placed in memory of the officer, awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Merit and recognized as Righteous Among the Nations for having saved many foreign and Italian Jews from genocide.
The Police Officer, since the autumn of 1943, when Fiume, Venezia Giulia and the entire Istrian area were annexed to the Third Reich through military occupation, he worked to save foreign and Italian Jews from genocide until he was arrested and deported to the Dachau concentration camp where he lost his life on February 10, 1945.
Civil and military authorities also took part in the commemoration.
