A multi-organ retrieval was performed in the hospital company "Sant'Anna and San Sebastiano" in Caserta on a 75-year-old woman, who donated the liver, kidneys and corneas, after the irreversible brain functions were ascertained by the medical commission. The woman was admitted to the Anesthesia and Resuscitation operating unit, after going to the emergency room for cerebral hemorrhage.
After the preliminary diagnosis of brain death, the observation period began. For the multi-organ retrieval, three transplant teams intervened, all from Campania. In a note, the hospital company led by general manager Gubitosa thanked the donor's family for the sensitivity shown in the moment of pain; the precious act of solidarity has allowed to rekindle the hope of life in seriously ill people, who without a transplant would not have made it.
"Since the beginning of the year at the Caserta hospital - explain the director of Anesthesia and Resuscitation, Pasquale De Negri, and the referent of the Organ and Tissue Donation Coordination Unit, Patrizia Tidona - on two ascertainments of brain death we have registered a consent to donation and a multi-organ retrieval was carried out. In 2023, instead, on 4 ascertainments of brain death, two consents to donation and two oppositions were recorded and 2 multi-organ retrievals were carried out. Transplants save lives -underline the specialists - but without donations there can be no transplants".
