Naples Officials Demand Enhanced Security After Police Attacked by Illegal Vendor

I express solidarity with the local police officers attacked by an illegal vendor during a check on Marvasi street. Situations like those that are recorded daily in the area of Piazza Nolana and Piazza Garibaldi are not tolerable. Together with Councilor De Iesu, I have reported to Prefect Michele Di Bari the situation of the area asking for an enhancement of public order and security services, given also the alarm that legitimately arises among citizens. I have therefore asked the Prefect to convene an ad hoc public order committee, finding full availability in Di Bari," so Mayor Gaetano Manfredi. The illegal vendor who attacked the officers, causing bruises and abrasions deemed healable between 3 and 7 days, was stopped not without difficulty also due to the intervention in his aid by other vendors who surrounded the Local Police patrol and also prevented the seizure of the goods (shoes with probably counterfeit brands). Only thanks to the intervention of other municipal police patrols and the State Police was it possible to stop the illegal vendor, who also attempted acts of self-harm. Following identification, it was ascertained that he is a 35-year-old Tunisian citizen without a fixed abode. The man was reported at large. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. On other occasions, local police officers have been attacked during service operations. We have represented to the prefect the need to intervene in a coordinated manner, with inter-force services, to effectively counteract the phenomenon of commercial illegality, which in addition to being a form of unfair competition also poses serious problems of decorum and security. We are working to restore legality in that area as in others that present similar situations and ensure civil coexistence," stated the Councilor for Legality and Municipal Police Antonio De Iesu.
