Sit-in in Piazza Vanvitelli by the residents of the condominiums on Via Morghen and Via Solimena, evacuated following the opening of two sinkholes.
About a hundred people joined the demonstration, improvising a procession between the square and Via Scarlatti to demand immediate interventions from the municipal administration to be able to return to their homes and for greater protection and continuous monitoring of the subsoil's criticalities in the hill area.
Present was the deputy Francesco Emilio Borrelli along with a delegation from Europa Verde led by municipal councilors Gennaro Nasti and Luca Bonetti together with Nelide Milano and Rosario Pugliese. At the end of the demonstration, the deputy went to inspect the affected areas together with the residents, noting in Via Solimena two new openings in the asphalt.
"Facing such an emergency, we find the lack of continuous dialogue, as denounced by the protesters, between the municipal administration, the ABC (Water Board), and the families forced to leave their homes unacceptable. The first thing these people ask for is to know the causes of the sinkholes and what technical interventions need to be implemented, along with their timelines. The lack of correct and timely information generates further tensions that must absolutely be spared to those who are already facing such an emergency. We will be vigilant on the timing of the works starting with the filling of the sinkhole on Via Morghen, which should begin on Monday, and we ask for the Prefect Michele Di Bari to verify the conditions for declaring a state of emergency for the citizens of that area, in order to ensure them adequate sustenance. Unfortunately, we believe that the two sinkholes opened in Vomero are just the tip of the iceberg of a much more problematic situation of the city's subsoil. The sewer network must be constantly monitored and maintained punctually, pending its submission to a major modernization work. Before these criticalities expand into other areas of the city. Structural interventions are needed for the monitoring of what happens under our feet pending what we believe to be the greatest planning work for Naples, and which we have been asking for years, namely a Subsoil Master Plan that allows to guarantee greater safety to citizens and a planning of maintenance and modernization interventions of the sub-services. Instead of wasting resources on unfeasible public works, such as for example the Bridge over the Strait, it would be better to allocate funds for works to protect the lives of citizens".
