The fourth of the «Encounters on dialect» curated by the Committee for the safeguard and enhancement of the Neapolitan linguistic heritage and organized by the Campania Festival Foundation, directed by Ruggero Cappuccio, will be dedicated to the relationship with cinema.
Next Monday, February 26, at 4 pm at the Musap - Fondazione Circolo Artistico Politecnico Ets in Piazza Trieste e Trento in Naples (Palazzo Zapata), professors Fabio Rossi (University of Messina) and Carolina Stromboli, a member of the ad hoc body appointed by the Campania Region, will analyze the ties between Italian and dialect on the big screen, the use of a language that is increasingly realistic, multilingual and expressionist, and the use of Neapolitan in cinema.
A journey that starts from the dialectal color spots of the «white telephones» and the Visconti-style neorealism of documentary stamp and arrives at the turning point of the eighties, largely due to the genius of Massimo Troisi, and the most recent linguistic novelty of «Gomorra» by Matteo Garrone, capable of representing without any filter the dialectal varieties and different social marginalities.
A long journey, made up of films that have anticipated the times, such as those by Salvatore Piscitelli, but also directors like Mario Martone, Antonio Capuano, Pappi Corsicato and Stefano Incerti, who in the nineties spread an image of Naples far from stereotypes, but, in different ways, also relevant on the linguistic level.

Fabio Rossi wrote «Italian Language and Cinema», published by Carrocci in 2023, «The Cinematic Language» (Aracne, 2006) and «The Language in Play» (Bulzoni, 2002). Carolina Stromboli edited the critical edition of «Lo cunto de li cunti» by Giovan Battista Basile (Salerno publisher, 2013) and wrote the book “Dialect on the Big Screen. Neapolitan in the History of Italian Cinema”. With Patricia Bianchi and Nicola De Blasi she published the volume entitled “Massimo Troisi, a Modern Neapolitan”
