Mission to the United States to plan upcoming activities. The agreement is expected to be signed by the end of 2024. The sea bathes their history. And ferries projects. The city of Sorrento and the famous Californian location of Dana Point have signed a collaboration agreement to initiate exchanges between high school students, who will become ambassadors in the fields of art and gastronomy. A delegation from the Municipality of Sorrento is a guest in the United States, at the invitation of the mayor of Dana Point, Jamey M. Federico, to plan a program of actions to be implemented. Leading the representation of the municipal administration of Sorrento, by delegation of the mayor, Massimo Coppola, is the president of the council Luigi Di Prisco who is participating in numerous meetings with leaders of educational, cultural, and associative institutions.
This activity follows, in chronological order, a first agreement signed in January 2023 by the mayors of the two municipalities and the subsequent visit to Sorrento, in October, by a representation of the United States city. "This is a first step towards a twinning between our cities," explains President Di Prisco. "It is a great emotion for us to be here and to share values such as the love for culture and art and environmental sustainability policies. As well as the element of the sea, and symbols like the whale, present in our local religious tradition, as well as in the culture of this part of California, which dedicates a large festival to them every year. In the coming months, we will start various activities, through training exchanges between our students, in the name of art, craftsmanship, and gastronomy, with courses and masterclasses.
This framework includes the appointments that the delegation, which also includes the head of the Culture Office, Donato Sarno, and the head of International Relations, Silvana Gargiulo is taking part in. From the meeting with the members of the Rotary Club to the meeting with the executives of Dana Hills High School, to various events organized by the Dana Point Sister Cities International association, chaired by Robert Zasa. Among the events, also the inauguration of an art exhibition titled "Dana Point Sorrento Evocative Seaescapes", curated by Rossella Savarese, from the SyArt Gallery of Sorrento and by Karin Schell which, after the Sorrento leg last October, is now hosted at the Dana Bay Gallery, with works depicting the Sorrento peninsula. The mission will see in the next hours a meeting with the Consul General of Italy in Los Angeles, Raffaella Valentini, to inform her about the programs to be developed and the activities already started.
With its beaches animated by surfers and waters populated by whales and dolphins, art galleries and many venues that characterize it, Dana Point is located in Orange County of the State of California and has about 33,000 inhabitants. The climate, the geographical position, and the characteristic of being both tourist destinations and venues for important events, unite them to Sorrento. A bond that the twinning, expected by 2024, will be able to strengthen and transform into new opportunities.
