Over 150 people participated this morning, in the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore in Forcella, in the historic center of Naples, at a gathering of Neapolitan street social workers organized by Street Doctors, an association that, with a medical camper, roams the streets of Naples providing care, medical consultations and health assistance to the homeless.
«The street, an occasion for meetings and possibilities for relationships», this was the theme of the discussion, which was attended by Professor Vincenzo Castelli, one of the leading national experts on reception networks and social inclusion. With him, Bruno Casaretti and Enzo Cirigliano, from Street Doctors, the director of Caritas in Naples, Sister Marisa Pitrella, and Corrado Gabriele, a radio speaker and volunteer of Street Doctors.
«The most important thing for those who work on the street is to become more credible than the subjects of crime - said Castelli - when we work on the street it becomes very difficult to intervene with situations connected with drug dealing or prostitution, because they do not speak there, because they are afraid of being controlled. With many girls we have tried everything, we have also given away make-up mirrors with phone numbers recorded on the back to call in case of emergency. Preparation and attention are needed».
Representatives of the Street Coordination, which in Naples brings together about 120 associations, soup kitchens, reception houses and volunteer structures, who dialogue for interventions through social and telematic platforms, were also present at the meeting.
For the occasion, an app called Street Coordination was also presented, available to all volunteer and institutional realities operating in the city in support of the homeless, to ensure timely and coordinated interventions.
