A disabled prisoner, 58 years old, has taken his own life in the prison of Carinola in Casertno, as reported by the Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police.
For the general secretary of Sappe, Donato Capece, "a prisoner who commits suicide in prison is a defeat for the State and for all of us who work on the front line. Tiziana Guacci, regional secretary of the union, explains that "the man was found hanged in his cell and attempts to rescue him by the medical staff and the Penitentiary Police were futile".
"Suicide is certainly an unpredictable event, the problem is preventing it. With the transfer of penitentiary health to the Regions, the situation has unfortunately significantly worsened", Guacci emphasizes.
"The lack of health workers, psychologists and psychiatrists is the crucial point of the issue. In our opinion, regional competitions and hiring of health personnel to be exclusively allocated to Campanian prisons are needed", concludes Guacci.
