There were moments of great tension yesterday in the prison of Avellino where an inmate, who was about to be transferred to another prison, armed with a knife and a knuckle duster, essentially took the officers of the Translation Unit hostage. This was reported by the general secretary of the Osapp, Leo Beneduci.
A negotiation followed with the inmate by the director of the Irpinian prison, Rita Romano, and the commander of the prison police officers. The director interrupted the transfer operations to prevent the situation from escalating. The inmate then attempted to escape by reaching the interior of the prison where he was stopped by the officers on duty who intervened en masse.
'The operational protocols proposed by the administration to the Undersecretary of Justice Del Mastro delle Vedove - comments Beneduci - have been a real failure, even in Avellino. We can only reiterate the urgency that new heads of the prison administration be appointed by the government who have the ability and skills to intervene adequately.'
