The Expansion of the Counterfeit Bazaar in Naples

The counterfeit bazaar in Naples is expanding. Belts, bags, and scarves bearing famous brands faithfully reproduced are now appearing everywhere, even in the historic center. From the open-air fake markets of Piazza Garibaldi, Porto, Corso Umberto, and Via Toledo, the phenomenon seems to also engulf the center of Naples, as evidenced by various photos published on social networks of branded bags and items that have appeared in the Decumani area. Emblematic is the image that portrays a 'Sea Monster', one of the two curious marble figures - actually precious 'snuffers' dating back to the 18th century - at the entrance of Palazzo Carafa della Spina, on Via Benedetto Croce, besieged by bags and belts of dubious production. Upon closer inspection, the phenomenon also seems to be linked to the increased presence of visitors and tourists in the city, particularly in the historic center, where, with ease and without many scruples, anyone can procure a branded bag or a pair of shoes for a few euros.
