At 11 AM in Argentina (15 local time), the trial for the death of Diego Armando Maradona began.
According to the autopsy, el Pibe died of acute pulmonary edema secondary to chronic heart failure exacerbated by dilated cardiomyopathy.
The defendants are all members of the team that assisted Maradona: the neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, the psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, the psychologist Carlos Diaz, the doctor in charge of Maradona's home care, Nancy Forlini, the nursing coordinator, Mariano Perroni, the nurse Ricardo Omar Almirón, the nurse Dahiana Gisela Madrid and the doctor Pedro Di Spagna, are the eight defendants on trial.
The evidence against them includes 130,000 audio recordings.
If the charges are confirmed by the judges, they face a sentence ranging from eight to 25 years, for premeditated murder.
In the courtroom are present the defenses, the accusations, and the general prosecutor of San Isidro. Also present are all parts of Maradona's family, but separately. On one side are Diego's children accompanied by lawyers Fernando Burlando and Mario Baudry. On the other side are the sisters with Pablo Jurado, a lawyer from the office of Matías Morla.
