Two Men Charged for Duping 73-Year-Old Woman in Elaborate Scam

The State Police of Caserta have charged two men from the province of Naples, believed to have scammed a 73-year-old woman residing in the province of Viterbo. During the patrol of the A1 highway, the highway police checked, near Marcianise, a vehicle traveling at high speed in the south direction. The police officers became suspicious when the passenger threw a package, inside which were found gold objects. After thorough checks, other valuables were recovered, hidden in various parts of the passenger compartment, for a total value of about 6,000 euros. The two occupants, one burdened with numerous previous convictions for property crimes, could not provide valid explanations for the possession. Investigations have led to the discovery of a scam carried out by the two in the city of Arlena di Castro, in the Viterbo area, where a 73-year-old woman was deceived by a phone call from a person, presenting himself as a "carabinieri marshal", who informed her of her son's arrest for a serious accident. Frightened by the story, the lady handed over her belongings to an accomplice of the fake "marshal", as a caution to avoid the complaint. Thanks to the collaboration with the Carabinieri of the city of Tuscania, the woman was traced, who recognized as her own the valuables found, as well as one of the subjects stopped. The two, born in 1982 and 2003, have been charged with aggravated fraud and all the jewels found seized for subsequent restitution.
