A new attempt to smuggle drugs into the Salerno prison was thwarted by A-Iron, the drug-sniffing dog from the canine unit of the Avellino penitentiary police. The four-legged officer sniffed out the doses of hashish that a woman, about to visit an inmate, was hiding among her clothes, allowing for their detection and her subsequent charge. 'Congratulations to the canine group,' comment the unionists Ciro Auricchio and Giuseppe Del Sorbo, 'after Spike, A-Iron is also becoming a nightmare for dealers. We are now witnessing attempts to introduce drugs into penal institutions on a daily basis. We have repeatedly asked the administration's leaders to provide the penitentiary police with more resources, both human and instrumental, to fight this scourge.'
